A four-step buying path

First identify whether the yarn is an unopened hank, a loose skein or an existing cake. A hank normally needs controlled support from a swift or a careful substitute; a winder shapes the yarn but does not replace that support.

1. Choose the drive. Compare manual winders with electric winders by setup, control and the amount you expect to wind.
2. Choose capacity. Use the capacity guide to treat a maker’s stated ounce figure as a comparison point, not a promise that every bulky or lofty yarn will fit.
3. Check the mount. Follow the clamp and table-fit guide to measure the usable edge, clearance below it and room for the yarn path. A freestanding model avoids a table clamp but still needs a stable surface.
4. Verify the exact model. Similar names can hide different controls or capacities. Open the selected listing and confirm every specification essential to your setup.
