Compare the yarn's mass with the exact winder's stated capacity, then consider how bulky the yarn is and how much room the growing cake has. A mass rating is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every fiber and thickness will fit in the same amount. Stop before the cake interferes with the mechanism.
Translate ounces and grams first
In these product ratings, ounces describe mass, not fluid volume. Multiply ounces by approximately 28.35 to convert to grams. Keep the original manufacturer's wording beside the conversion so a rounded number does not become a new performance promise.
A 100 g label is not the same as a 4 oz label: four ounces is approximately 113 g. Also check whether the yarn label lists the whole package or whether you are looking at a partly used remainder.

Use exact model specifications
Knit Picks lists its item 82500 at 100 g or 3.5 oz. Stanwood currently lists three separate hand winders: the compact YBW-A at about 4 oz, the compact YBW-M at about 7 oz and the large metal MYBW-01 at about 10 oz. Those are maker-listed capacities, not results of our own winding tests.
Do not transfer a brand's largest capacity to all its products. A set may contain a compact model, while a separate listing offers a larger winder. Match the model name and product page before attaching a number to your shopping comparison.

Use the smallest documented capacity that covers the yarn-label mass you ordinarily wind while leaving physical clearance for its bulk. A 4 oz rating is not a promise that every airy or bulky 4 oz package will fit; the 7 oz Stanwood YBW-M creates an intermediate option, and a 10 oz manual winder can reduce planned splits for larger packages. Capacity alone does not decide construction, table fit or setup.
For an occasional package above your usual range, splitting it may be more practical than choosing every feature around the exception. For frequent larger packages, compare the Stanwood MYBW-01's documented 10 oz capacity and approximately 2 1/8-inch clamp allowance with its workspace needs before buying.
Understand why yarn bulk matters
Two yarns can have the same mass and occupy different amounts of space. The cake also has to remain clear of the guide and base as it grows. This is why a rating stated only in ounces cannot answer every question about bulky or loosely structured yarn.
Yardage alone is not a substitute for mass or physical fit either. A long length of fine yarn and a shorter length of thick yarn can form very different packages. Read both the yarn label and any yarn-type qualification the winder manufacturer gives.
Plan a smaller cake before space runs out
If the full package is beyond the published rating, plan to divide it rather than discovering the limit mid-winding. When precise equal portions matter, use an appropriate scale and account for any label or container in the measurement. Record the amounts actually measured.
Decide whether you want to cut between portions or preserve a connection. Preserving it needs deliberate arrangement so the connecting strand does not become buried or tangled. Do not create a join simply because an arbitrary cake size looks tidy; consider how the yarn will be used.
Treat clearance as a stopping signal
During winding, watch the package rather than just the amount remaining. If it approaches a guide or moving component, stop. Winding harder or increasing speed cannot create more space. Reorganize the yarn into a smaller amount before continuing.
If a listing gives inconsistent numbers, ask for clarification or choose a better-documented model. Photos of oversized cakes and unqualified phrases such as large capacity are not a substitute for a clear specification tied to the exact machine.

Common questions
Will a 4 oz winder fit every 100 g skein?
Do not assume so. Although 100 g is below 4 oz by mass, yarn bulk and the manufacturer's intended yarn range can affect physical fit.
Is a 7 oz yarn winder the same as a 198 g guarantee?
No. Seven ounces converts to approximately 198 g by mass, but that calculation does not guarantee that every bulky or loosely wound 198 g yarn package will have enough physical clearance.
Does a swift's 6 ft rating mean it winds six feet of yarn?
No. A swift rating like that describes the supported hank circumference. It does not state the total yarn length or the winder's cake capacity.
